Tuna Intakes For Bodybuilders, Dieters And Other Athletes

Tuna has long been a favorite protein source for bodybuilders, dieters, and other athletes. It\'s cheap, fast, portable, and pre-portioned into convenient sizes. Did I mention it was cheap? The fact is, it is a great source of protein and omega-3 essential fats and it makes a great snack too.

Solid white skipjack can taste great all by itself if it fits your budget but it’s much easier to have tuna fish diet using tuna fish cans that are ready for use in much cheaper price and packed for one per every meal.

Right dose of omega-3 fatty acid identified

Washington, September 1st, 2009_A team of French scientists has identified just the right dose of DHA acid that prevents heart disease in healthy men.
This study is the first to identify how much DHA or docosahexaenoic acid (omega-3 fatty acid) is necessary to promote optimal heart health.
Scientists show that a 200 mg daily dose of DHA is enough to affect biochemical markers that reliably predict cardiovascular problems, such as those related to aging, atherosclerosis, and diabetes.
This study shows that regularly consuming small amounts of DHA is likely to improve the health status of people, especially in regards to cardiovascular function.
Researchers then examined the effects of increasing doses of DHA on 12 healthy male volunteers aged between 53 and 65.
These men consumed doses of DHA at 200, 400, 800, and 1600 mg per day for two weeks for each dose amount, with DHA being the only omega-3 fatty acid in their diet.
Blood and urine samples were collected before and after each dose and at eight weeks after DHA supplementation stopped.
Researchers then examined these samples for biochemical markers indicating the effects of each dose on the volunteers.
Now that we have a very good idea about how much DHA is just right, the next step is to try it out in an expanded clinical trial that involves many more people so it’s better to stick with tasty foods that contain DHA, like fish, rather than getting a quick fatty-acid fix at the local vitamin store.

3 Day Tuna Diet

You might have heard of the 3 day tuna diet, maybe even in connection with a famous hospital, as an easy and quick way to lose weight over just three days. While the diet has the feel of an urban legend, there are people on the Internet who claim to have used it.

History of the 3 Day Tuna Diet

The diet has been floating around on the Internet for several years, and is often passed around as a diet recommended by a weight-loss clinic or a doctor. While it\'s not clear how this diet got started, it is known that no hospital or doctor has recommended it.
\"We all wish that weight loss and other health benefits could occur with simply making three days worth of dietary change. But severely restricting your calories, and including/excluding specific foods from the diet is not the way to long-term, sustained weight loss and health benefits.\"

Components of the Diet

The 3 day tuna diet is, as you\'d expect, a three-day plan, but it does not require you to exclusively eat tuna for the three days.
Despite the fact that there\'s no real known source for this diet, the different websites you can find it on have remarkably similar ideas of what the diet entails.
Here\'s a sample, giving you the full day\'s menu for day one:

Breakfast

Black coffee or tea (can be sweetened with artificial sweetener) or water
Half a grapefruit or equivalent in juice
One slice of toast with a tablespoon of peanut butter

Lunch

Half a cup of tuna
One slice of toast
Black coffee, tea or water

Dinner

Three ounces of any lean meat
One cup green beans
One cup carrots
One cup vanilla ice cream
One medium apple
Black coffee, tea or water

The diet goes on in a similar fashion for two more days. In addition to the foods listed, dieters are advised to drink four more glasses of water (or diet soda) daily. Herbs, salt and pepper, lemon, vinegar, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup and mustard are also allowed.

After the three days, dieters are advised to go back to eating normally but not to overeat

Fish can help improve nervous system function

Washington, Dec 17_Omega-3 fatty acids, commonly found in fish, appears to play a significant role in improving nervous system function, reveals a new study.
The researchers insist two omega-3 fatty acids - docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) have been found to avoid sensory overload, maybe by maintaining nerve-cell membranes.
The finding connects low omega-3s to the information-processing problems found in people with schizophrenia; bipolar, obsessive-compulsive, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorders; Huntington’s disease; and other afflictions of the nervous system.
“It is an uphill battle now to reverse the message that ‘fats are bad,’ and to increase omega-3 fats in our diet,” said Norman Salem Jr., PhD, who led this study at the Laboratory of Membrane Biochemistry and Biophysics at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.
“Humans can convert less than one percent of the precursor into DHA, making DHA an essential nutrient in the human diet.
EPA is already known for its anti-inflammatory and cardiovascular effects, but DHA makes up more than 90 percent of the omega-3s in the brain (which has no EPA), retina and nervous system in general.
During the study, the researchers fed four different diets with no or varying types and amounts of omega-3s to four groups of pregnant mice and then their offspring.
They measured how the offspring, once grown, responded to a classic test of nervous-system function in which healthy animals are exposed to a sudden loud noise. Normally, animals flinch. However, when they hear a softer tone in advance, they flinch much less.
It appears that normal nervous systems use that gentle warning to prepare instinctively for future stimuli, an adaptive process called sensorimotor gating.
The mice raised on DHA and EPA showed normal, adaptive sensorimotor gating by responding in a significantly calmer way to the loud noises that followed soft tones.
